Surviving Houston Heat During World Cup 2026: A Fan’s Survival Guide

Houston in June and July Is No Joke

If you are flying in from Europe, South America, or anywhere that is not the Gulf Coast of the United States, Houston’s summer heat will be the biggest shock of your World Cup experience. This is not an exaggeration. Here are the numbers:

  • Average high temperature in June: 93°F (34°C)
  • Average high temperature in July: 96°F (36°C)
  • Humidity: 75-90% — the air feels like a wet blanket
  • Heat index: Often exceeds 105°F (40°C) — what it actually feels like
  • UV index: Extreme (10-11) — you will sunburn in 15 minutes without protection

NRG Stadium is air-conditioned. The FIFA Fan Festival in EaDo is mostly outdoors. The walk from your parking lot to the stadium gates is 15-30 minutes in direct sun. Preparation is not optional.

The Essentials: What to Bring

  • Water bottle (refillable) — NRG allows empty bottles through security. Fill up inside. Drink constantly.
  • Sunscreen SPF 50+ — Reapply every 2 hours. Houston’s UV index is extreme.
  • Cooling towel — Soak in water, drape around neck. Drops your body temperature fast. Available in our stadium essentials shop.
  • Portable fan (battery-operated) — Small USB fan clips to your hat or hangs around your neck. Shop portable fans.
  • Hat with brim — Baseball cap minimum. Wide brim is better. Sun is directly overhead.
  • Light-colored, loose clothing — Cotton or moisture-wicking. Dark colors absorb heat.
  • Electrolytes — Water alone is not enough. Liquid IV, Pedialyte, or electrolyte tablets.
  • Rain poncho — Houston gets sudden, intense afternoon thunderstorms in summer. They last 20-30 minutes then the sun returns. Grab a poncho.

Signs of Heat Exhaustion (Know Before You Go)

Every summer, Houston ERs treat thousands of heat-related cases. Know the warning signs:

  • Heavy sweating followed by no sweating (danger sign)
  • Dizziness, nausea, headache
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Muscle cramps
  • Cool, clammy skin despite the heat

If you feel these: Get to shade or AC immediately. Pour water on your head and wrists. Drink electrolytes. If symptoms do not improve in 15 minutes, seek medical help. NRG Stadium has medical stations on every level.

Beat the Heat: Houston’s AC Advantages

Houston is built for extreme heat. The city has more air conditioning per square foot than almost anywhere on earth. Use it strategically:

  • The Galleria — Ice skating rink inside a mall. Yes, ice skating in June. 2.4 million sq ft of AC.
  • Houston Museum District — 20+ museums, most are free or under $20. MFAH, Natural Science, Children’s Museum. All heavily air-conditioned.
  • Space Center Houston — Indoor exhibits plus tram tours (partially shaded). Full day activity in AC.
  • POST Houston — Massive indoor food hall downtown. 30+ vendors, strong AC. Also the World Cup volunteer center.
  • Underground Houston — Downtown tunnel system connects buildings underground. Miles of AC shopping and dining below street level.

Recovery Options

  • IV Hydration Bars — Walk-in clinics across Houston ($75-$125). Get a liter of fluids with vitamins directly into your bloodstream. Sounds extreme; Houstonians use them regularly in summer. Book IV Recovery through our events page.
  • Hotel pools — Most Houston hotels have pools. Use them between events.
  • Spa recoveryBook a spa day package ($95-$125) between match days.

Time Your Activities

  • Morning (7-10 AM): Outdoor activities, walking tours, sightseeing. Heat is manageable.
  • Midday (11 AM – 4 PM): INDOOR ONLY. This is the danger zone. Museums, food halls, shopping.
  • Evening (5 PM – midnight): Outdoor dining, bar hopping, Fan Festival. Still hot but survivable with the sun down.
