The fastest path to NRG Stadium on match day.
MetroRail Red Line. $1.25 one-way. Direct from downtown to Stadium Park. Everything else takes longer.
NRG Stadium location and basics
NRG Stadium sits at 1 NRG Park, Houston, TX 77054. The stadium is part of the NRG Park complex, which also houses NRG Center, NRG Arena and the Astrodome. The complex is south of the I-610 South Loop, bounded by Kirby Drive to the west, Fannin Street to the east, and the South Loop to the north. Coordinates: 29.6847° N, 95.4107° W.
For World Cup 2026, NRG Stadium will host 7 matches between June 14 and July 4. Every match day, the surrounding area enters a controlled-access security perimeter, road closures multiply, and parking demand exceeds supply at standard event-day rates.
The single highest-leverage decision you can make for a World Cup match in Houston: don’t drive your own car to NRG Park.
METRO Red Line — the cleanest path to NRG
METRO Houston operates the Red Line light rail. The Red Line runs north-south through the central spine of Houston and terminates at NRG Park. For World Cup match days, the Red Line is the most efficient route from any downtown, Midtown, Museum District or Medical Center origin.

How the Red Line walk to NRG works
From the Stadium Park / Astrodome station, walk west across NRG Park surface lots toward NRG Stadium. The walk is short — approximately 5 to 8 minutes from platform to stadium gates depending on the gate. The path is exposed (no shade structures), so plan for Houston June sun. Stay hydrated.
Driving to NRG Stadium — direction by direction
From downtown Houston (any direction)
Take the I-610 South Loop to either the Kirby Drive (Exit 1A area) or Fannin Street exits. Both place you on the NRG Park perimeter. Off-peak drive: 10 to 15 minutes. Match-day drive: 30 to 50 minutes with security-perimeter traffic.
From Katy (West)
Primary route: I-10 East to I-69 / US-59 South to I-610 South Loop, then west on 610 to Kirby or Fannin. Approximately 25 to 30 miles. Off-peak: 35 to 45 minutes. Match-day: 60 to 90 minutes. Recommended alternative: drive to a downtown parking garage on Smith or Louisiana, then take MetroRail Red Line south.
From The Woodlands (North)
Primary route: I-45 South through downtown Houston, continuing south on I-45 to South Loop, then west on 610 to Fannin. Or use SH-288 South from the I-45 / 288 split for a more direct NRG approach. Approximately 30 to 35 miles. Off-peak: 40 to 50 minutes. Match-day: 75 to 100 minutes. Recommended alternative: Park-and-Ride at North Shepherd or Spring Park-and-Ride lot, then transfer.
From Sugar Land (Southwest)
Primary route: US-59 / I-69 North toward downtown, exit at I-610 South Loop, east on 610 to Fannin or Kirby. Approximately 22 miles. Off-peak: 30 to 40 minutes. Match-day: 55 to 75 minutes.
From Pearland (South)
Primary route: SH-288 North to OST / Old Spanish Trail, west to NRG Park. Or continue to I-610 South Loop. Approximately 15 to 18 miles. Off-peak: 25 to 35 minutes. Match-day: 50 to 70 minutes. Pearland fans have the shortest drive of any major suburb.
From Cypress and Northwest Houston
Primary route: US-290 East to I-610 West Loop, south to South Loop, east to NRG. Approximately 30 miles. Off-peak: 45 to 55 minutes. Match-day: 85 to 110 minutes.
From Galveston (Southeast)
Primary route: I-45 North directly to South Loop, west to NRG. Approximately 50 miles. Off-peak: 55 to 70 minutes. Match-day: 90 to 130 minutes.
Parking at NRG Park
NRG Park operates a named color-coded parking lot system. Principal match-day lots include:
- Yellow Lot — Standard general admission match-day parking.
- Orange Lot — Standard general admission, alternate approach side.
- Brown Lot — Standard general admission.
- Gold Lot — Premium / preferred parking with closer stadium proximity.
NRG Park standard event parking pricing varies by event. World Cup 2026 match-day parking pricing has not yet been formally published by NRG Park or FIFA. Expect: (a) pre-paid online purchase required (drive-up cash is unlikely on match days), (b) elevated pricing relative to standard event rates, (c) sell-out of premium lots well in advance for marquee matches like Germany vs Curaçao opener and any Portugal fixture.
The official parking purchase portal will be announced by NRG Park and FIFA in advance of the tournament. Watch the NRG Park ticketing and parking pages directly.
Rideshare — Uber and Lyft at NRG
NRG Park designates specific rideshare drop-off and pick-up zones for major events. Historically these have been on the south side of the complex near McNee Road, separated from primary stadium pedestrian flow. The pickup zone is well-marked on rideshare apps as “NRG Stadium Designated Pickup.”
What to expect on World Cup match days:
- Drop-off (pre-match): Tighter security perimeter than standard NRG events. Drop-off zones may be moved further from the stadium gates than standard. Allow 10 to 15 minutes for the walk from drop-off to gates.
- Pick-up (post-match): Surge pricing is mathematically certain in the 60-to-90-minute window after final whistle. Walking 0.5 to 1 mile away from the immediate NRG perimeter before requesting can reduce surge meaningfully.
- Alternative: Combine MetroRail and rideshare — take Red Line to Stadium Park for drop-off, take Red Line back to Museum District or Downtown for pickup. This bypasses post-match surge entirely.
What changes on World Cup match days vs a regular NRG event
Security perimeters around NRG Stadium will be expanded for World Cup matches relative to standard Houston Texans NFL games or Houston Livestock Show events. Expected operating changes (based on standard FIFA tournament operations at host stadiums):
- Bag policy: FIFA-restricted bag size. Likely clear-bag policy with strict dimensional limits.
- Gate-open time: Likely 3 hours pre-kickoff. Plan to be on-site at gate-open time for marquee matches.
- Road closures: McNee Road, NRG Park internal roads, and segments of Kirby Drive south of South Loop are likely match-day closure candidates. Final closure map published by City of Houston ahead of June 14.
- Pedestrian routing: Approaches from MetroRail and from rideshare drop-off will be controlled. Expect dedicated pedestrian channels.
- Re-entry policy: No re-entry standard at FIFA matches. Once you exit, you do not return.
Accessibility
NRG Stadium is fully ADA accessible. METRO Red Line trains and the Stadium Park station offer level boarding for wheelchair users. Accessible parking is available across NRG Park lots with valid disability placard or plate. Accessible seating purchase for FIFA matches is handled through the official FIFA ticketing channel.
The before-and-after plan
The match itself is 90 minutes plus stoppage. Your trip is the surrounding 8 hours. Build the rest of your day around venues close to your route in:
- Pre-match meal near downtown if you are taking Red Line: Tom’s Watch Bar downtown or Biggio’s at Marriott Marquis — both walkable to Main Street Square Red Line station.
- Pre-match meal near NRG if you are driving: J-Bar-M Barbecue in EaDo (worth the detour) or Pitch 25 for soccer-bar atmosphere.
- Post-match Texas BBQ + beer: 8th Wonder Brewery.
- Post-match Galleria / Uptown if staying west: The Rustic.
